Voluntary recall: metal fragments in beef and turkey sticks
Chomps voluntarily recalled approximately 29,541 pounds of Original Beef Sticks and Original Turkey Sticks due to possible metal fragment contamination. The products were made by Idaho Smokehouse Partners; the recall was announced by USDA FSIS. Two consumer complaints reported metal in the product. Affected items had expiration dates Feb 10 and Feb 17, 2026, and were distributed in California, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, and Washington. No injuries or illnesses were reported. Consumers were advised to discard or return product.
Packaging reduction and 1.5 million meat sticks donated
Chomps reduced pouch sizes and removed an estimated 100,000 pounds of plastic from packaging. The company also donated over 1.5 million meat sticks in 2024 through a cosmetic-defect donation program to support food access in underserved communities.
Land to Market partnership for regenerative agriculture
Chomps partnered with Land to Market, the Savory Institute's verified sourcing solution for regenerative agriculture. The company uses Land to Market's Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV) to measure environmental impact and vet supply chain partners, supporting farms and ranches that show positive land-health outcomes.
$80 million minority investment from Stride Consumer Partners
Chomps took its first outside equity: an $80 million minority investment from private equity firm Stride Consumer Partners. The company had been bootstrapped for a decade. The round valued Chomps in the $200–300 million range and was used to scale production and distribution.
Trader Joe's began carrying Chomps, marking the brand's first major national retailer. The placement catalyzed growth and helped Chomps expand from a small direct-to-consumer and regional business into a nationally distributed brand.
Chomps was founded by Pete Maldonado and Rashid Ali with a $6,500 initial investment. The company focused on grass-fed beef and clean-ingredient meat sticks—no nitrates, no sugar, no artificial preservatives—and grew through direct-to-consumer and regional retail before securing national distribution.
